Weight Management & Health Promotion

A personalized approach to weight management is a central tenet of our practice. At Whole Health Wellness Center, we customize our treatments to achieve the best results in each patient. We always keep the end point, your ideal weight, in sight. We complete a comprehensive evaluation on each patient including review of past medical records, ordering metabolic testing,  allergy testing and genetic analysis to determine what type of dietary recommendations will best suit each patient. Our treatment plans include personalized food plans, addressing behavioral modification through a variety of techniques (including acupuncture, mindfulness training, emotional freedom technique, guided meditation) and exercise/activity recommendations. Weight management can be very complex, but we have extensive experience in successfully helping patients who have “tried everything and failed” before they have come to our office. Two of our programs are reviewed below.

FIRST LINE THERAPY

Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes are recommended by the National Institutes of Health as treatment for many common health problems. Changes include diet, exercise, stress reduction and sleep. FirstLine Therapy is a low glycemic load Mediterranean style plan designed to improve body composition, helping patients maintain muscle as they lost fat. This service is offered to patients who are overweight, have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, metabolic syndromes and many other chronic disorders.

Our weight loss programs are designed to stimulate your metabolism to burn unhealthy fat while giving your body important nutrition for overall health-helping you to look and feel better. Our food plan help control carbohydrates that may impede weight loss, but still provides you with a huge selection of health-promoting vegetables that are rich in phytonutrients- important compounds that are important for health in addition to essential vitamins and minerals. And the healthy protein options help you maintain muscle as you lose fat for a healthier body composition (muscle-to-fat ratio).

There is a simple calculation to determine if you are affected by obesity. Here is the calculation using pounds and inches: Weight/[height x height] x 703. This formula is helpful but it doesn’t give us the complete picture …of body composition. We have patients in our practice who have a higher proportion of muscle mass and by BMI calculation appear to be overweight but are actually quite healthy. Other tools we use to assess a patient’s risk include:

  1. InBody Body Composition Analysis which gives us a more complete analysis of fat mass and lean body mass
  2. Measurement of waist circumference. Women over 35 inches are at increased risk and men over 40 inches are at increased risk.

We also have patients in our practice who appear to be in the healthy weight range by BMI calculation but after having a BIA test have determined they have a higher fat mass than expected putting them at risk for chronic health conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

There are a wide range of options available for treating obesity and increased fat mass at our practice and our physicians can determine which one is right for you—personalized to your specific needs.
